Lei Lani Kereopa Hosking is the Deputy Head of the Locals Collegiate Community at the University of Otago. Born and raised in Ōtepoti Dunedin, New Zealand, she is a descendant of Waikato, Āitu, and Rarotonga, with affiliations to Ko Taupiri te maunga, Ko Waikato te awa, and Ko Tainui me Taakitimu ngā waka. She holds a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Classics and a certification in Early Childhood Education. Her academic interests center on people, their stories, and how they learn and grow across different stages of life. Drawing from her own experience as a first-year student living in a flat without built-in support, where she felt unsure about fitting in or accessing assistance, she is deeply committed to ensuring that local students who live outside residential halls experience a strong sense of belonging and community.
In her current role, Lei Lani works alongside the Manager to support the day-to-day running of the Locals Programme, bringing a pastoral focus to create inclusive, culturally responsive opportunities for students to connect and thrive. She collaborates with volunteer leaders to run events, offer guidance, and foster a welcoming environment within Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, the University of Otago. Prior to this position, she spent three years working as a kaiāwhina in the residential college system, gaining essential insights into student support needs. Through her efforts, she helps local students access the whānau and support typically available to those in halls of residence, promoting personal and academic growth.
